The MOON Museum

On July 20th 1999, a very special event occurred in a small corner of Avatar Cyberspace, the reenactment of the Apollo XI and IX lunar mission on their 30th Anniversaries.  Hundreds of people entered a multiuser virtual reality lunar aerospace museum on the south pole of the Moon in the year AD 3000.  Apollo IX Astronaut Russell (Rusty) Schweickart attended as Guest of Honor and guide in this historic reenactment at the proper date and time of the Apollo Landing 30th anniversary.  Guests toured through landing sites and space rocketry, experiencing recreations of Rusty's EVA mission on Apollo 9, as well as his guided tour through a virtual reality reenactment of the Apollo11 Mission, humankind's first steps on the Moon.  These pages record a historic event where "outer space met cyber space."  You can also read the complete chat log of the event.

All through the event, we shared the reality of our global participation that night, being in the presence of the first generation to share the legend of the Apollo Mission with others who had not yet been born when it happened.  This night was also the Gala Opening of the MOON Museum, and since then thousands of people have visited.

Now you can join us online on the MOON!  Just install your browser and connect up.  Visit The MOON Museum in mutual reality with people from all over the world, all day every day.
